🏆 7 Rules for SDRs

Tips for success inside.

Read time: 3 mins

There are a ton of areas SDRs can improve.

Here are areas I found that made the largest impact.

1. Plan Tomorrow, Today.

Have your tomorrow planned out by EOD today.

What hurt me the most early on was trying to come up with a plan on the fly.

You waste a LOT of time just getting started.

Spend 15mins at the end of day.

  • Plan out what you’re doing tomorrow.

  • When you’re doing it.

  • Goals by EOD.

2. Focus on the problems.

Pitching features will make you sound like everyone else.

Instead...

Focus on the problems your ICP is facing.

  • How does your product help solve those?

  • What are some stories you can reference?

  • How do those problems impact them specifically?

Focus on problems.

Then everything becomes easier.

3. Write down tasks, prioritize, execute.

Have a system to capture/prioritize/execute tasks.

I use TickTick for example, but you can use anything.

If you rely on your own memory it will fail you.

You need to:

  • Capture tasks as they come.

  • Set a priority level.

  • Block times to execute - High/Med/Low priority tasks

4. One hour EOD for development.

Focusing on your development pays off big time.

Most people leave time for their development IF they have time.

Reality is if you commit to one hour per day.

(5hr’s per week)

You’ll be shocked with how much better you become.

5. Break your day up.

It’s easy to get burned out in the SDR role.

I found that breaking up the day into two parts

Helps you stay fresh, & breaks things up daily.

Execution vs. Creation

  • Execution - getting your prospecting out of the way early in the day. Make sure your hitting your activity metrics.

  • Creation - Time to create cadences, creative outreach, outside the box ideas.

6. Have a partner in crime.

It’s hard to make it through the SDR grind alone.

There are ebbs & flows. Good days & bad days.

You need someone to:

  • Vent to.

  • Grow with.

  • Compete with.

Find someone with similar goals/drive.

Work together.

7. Document everything.

A mistake i made early in my career was not keeping track of all the work I did.

  • Praise from customers.

  • Performance metrics.

  • Praise within slack.

  • Awards.

  • Etc...

Look for opportunities to build your Sales portfolio.

p.s. it’ll pay off big during promotion time.
